Flying Book Pendant Light

The Flying Book Pendant Light shapes its shade like an open book caught mid-flight, with two angled panels spreading out from a slim central spine. It is a playful idea handled with restraint, so the fixture still reads as modern rather than novelty. At 30 centimetres wide and 20 centimetres high it suits a single seat, a bedside, or a corner rather than a whole room. Five colours are available: black, blue, pink, white and yellow.

The shade is moulded PVC over an iron frame, a pairing that keeps the piece light on the cord while staying rigid and hard-wearing. Light filters through and around the panels to give a warm, diffused glow with soft edges rather than a sharp pool. It uses one E26 bulb, which is not included, so LED, incandescent and fluorescent options all work and you can set the tone yourself. The adjustable 150 centimetre cord lets you tune the hanging length to the ceiling.

It works well over a reading nook, a bedside table, a study desk, a lounge corner, or a cafe counter where a talking point is welcome. Installation is a standard hardwired pendant fitting, and the cord can be shortened during fitting to the drop you want. This lamp is rated for dry indoor use only, so keep it away from bathrooms, laundries and covered outdoor areas. Wipe the shade with a dry or barely damp cloth, and switch the fixture off before changing a bulb.
