Wilhelm Bauhaus Table Lamp

The Wilhelm table lamp is a Bauhaus exercise in two shapes: a frosted glass dome sitting on a polished chrome body with a glass base. There is no ornament, and that restraint is what makes it work on a bedside table or a bare console. At 18 cm across and 36 cm tall it holds its proportion well, and the chrome picks up whatever is around it, so it takes on the colour of the room.

The frosted dome turns the bulb into an even, diffused glow that spreads outward rather than glaring at eye level. Chrome metal, a glass dome and a weighted glass base make it feel more substantial in the hand than its size suggests. It takes an E27 bulb, not included, so you can choose your own warmth and brightness, and a pull-chain switch on the fitting keeps operation tactile and simple.

It suits bedside tables, living rooms and minimalist home offices, and it is a good choice for anyone building a room around a few well-made pieces rather than many. The lamp is plug-in and needs no wiring: fit a bulb, place it on a flat, dry surface and route the cable away from walkways. Indoor use only. Wipe the chrome and glass with a soft dry cloth once the lamp is off and cool.
